San Diego’s very own Cece Cellura has once again made headlines in the world of collegiate softball! This talented player from San Diego State University has just been named the Mountain West Co-Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season, showcasing her impressive skills on the field and raising the Aztecs’ spirit.
This recent accolade is not Cellura’s first rodeo in the weekly honors. She was previously recognized as the Mountain West Player of the Week on February 17 of this year and is now basking in the glow of her second award. Sharing the spotlight with her this week is Hailey McLean from the University of Nevada, making for a friendly but competitive showcase in the conference.
As of now, the Aztecs hold a commendable 22-12 overall record, with their conference standing currently at 6-3. While they faced challenges over the weekend against Nevada, including a tough 1-0 loss in the series opener, the team showed resilience and determination for a rebound. The second game didn’t go as planned either, with the Wolf Pack hitting three home runs to defeat SDSU 5-2. But the Aztecs were not ready to give up just yet!

Her performance against Nevada on Thursday was nothing short of stellar, where she pitched a complete game, allowing only one run on five hits, while also striking out four batters, all without issuing a single walk during her six innings. Over the weekend, her overall stats improved even further, showcasing a 0.66 ERA and a notable 5.00 K:BB ratio through 10.2 innings pitched, striking out a total of ten batters. This, no doubt, cements her status as a key player for the Aztecs.
The San Diego State Aztecs have been grabbing attention with five weekly awards this season, including honors for players Cali Decker and Lala Macario as Player of the Week, along with Dee Dee Hernandez earning Pitcher of the Week accolades.
