The San Diego State Aztecs showcased their resilience with a thrilling series split against Colorado State. After a narrow defeat in the first game, the Aztecs bounced back spectacularly, winning the second game 10-2, highlighted by outstanding performances including a two-RBI triple and a three-run homer. With this victory, SDSU improved their record and set their sights on a crucial upcoming series against UNLV, aiming to maintain their championship ambitions.
In the sunny city of San Diego, the excitement of college softball swept through the air this weekend as the San Diego State Aztecs faced off against Colorado State in a thrilling weekend series. The battle kicked off with a nail-biting first game, where SDSU unfortunately fell short with a close score of 2-1.
Despite putting together a solid performance with a total of eight hits, the Aztecs just couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities, leaving fans with a bittersweet taste in their mouths. Dee Dee Hernandez showcased her incredible pitching skills, but it was a decisive fourth-inning two-run homer from Colorado State’s Autumn Rutherford that sealed the fate of the game. SDSU managed to score one run in the sixth inning thanks to a sacrifice fly, but that was not enough to turn the tide.
However, the Aztecs were not down for long. As they geared up to face Colorado State again on Sunday for their second matchup, they were determined to rebound and show off their power. And boy, did they deliver!
In the second game of the series, the Aztecs roared back with a sensational 10-2 victory that ended after just five innings, thanks to the mercy rule. What a comeback! SDSU’s offense was firing on all cylinders, and their first inning was nothing short of spectacular. They kicked things off with three runs right out of the gate. A two-RBI triple from Shannon Cunningham set the tone for the game, leaving everyone buzzing with excitement.
But that was just the beginning! Cunningham wasn’t finished yet—as she also went on to smash a homer in the third inning, further bolstering the Aztecs’ impressive score. It was a sight to behold as she became the first Aztec player since March 2020 to hit both a triple and a home run in the same game.
But wait, there’s more! The fourth inning was the grand finale, where SDSU exploded for five more runs. Grace Uribe stole the show with a tremendous three-run homer, showcasing her ability to keep Colorado State’s offense on the back foot. As the game progressed, Uribe also shone brightly on the mound, limiting the opposition’s chances and earning her sixth win of the season, boosting her impressive record to 6-0.
The drummer of this joyous game? Every single starter on the Aztecs’ roster notched at least one hit, highlighting the depth of talent within the team. Julie Holcomb made her mark too, reaching base with a single in the first inning, even though she was caught attempting to steal. Cali Decker also made her presence known after getting on base via a hit by pitch in the first game, contributing to the team’s overall offensive energy.
With their impressive win against Colorado State, the Aztecs improved their overall record to 24-14 and stood proud with an 8-5 tally in the Mountain West Conference. As they look forward to their upcoming three-game series against UNLV, the expectations are sky-high. The team knows they need to secure at least seven out of their final nine conference games to keep their championship hopes alive. But with performances like this weekend’s, those hopes are definitely within reach!
Stay tuned for more action as the Aztecs continue their quest for the Mountain West title, bringing fans along for the ride filled with adrenaline, excitement, and the occasional home run!
