But that’s not all! The project also includes a nine-story tower planned for the parking lot adjacent to the University Tower dorms at the intersection of Montezuma Road and 55th Street. The Evolve project seeks to transform the on-campus experience by introducing five 13-story towers and one nine-story building. With this expansion, SDSU hopes to achieve its goal of having all freshmen and sophomores live on-campus in university-owned housing. As financial forecasts suggest, this massive undertaking is also expected to generate approximately $300 million in annual revenue for the university, with the Evolve project contributing about 40% of that. Of course, living on campus comes with a price tag. Students can expect to pay around $22,450 for a shared room that includes the least expensive meal plan for nine months. While this investment might seem steep, many students find it worthwhile for the convenience and community atmosphere.

Concerns over Safety and Infrastructure

“Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone”. This raises important questions about evacuation routes in case of emergencies, particularly wildfires, since approximately 8,000 people could need to evacuate through a congested two-lane residential street during such incidents.

Additionally, the university’s Environmental Impact Report (EIR) has faced criticism. It does not factor in existing dorms and nearby apartments that house about 2,000 students in its evacuation plans, which leaves many wondering if the current infrastructure can handle the influx of new residents.

Community Sentiment

Residents have voiced their concerns about the density of the Evolve project and its implications for emergency preparedness, particularly following the frightening experience of the Montezuma Fire that resulted in massive evacuations. With many community members feeling anxious about the prospect of more students living in such a high-risk area, there are calls for SDSU to rethink its plans.
